Dear
Friend:
Rosh Hashana is a time to reflect on the past
and demonstrate renewed commitment to building a future of promise
and compassion for all. What better way to begin the new year than
by thinking of your less fortunate brothers and sisters in Israel,
especially the children.
Israel continues
to be gripped by a crisis of unprecedented proportion. According to
a study released in July, 30% of Israeli children are living below
the poverty line, the highest rate of child poverty in the western
world. Israeli children even fare worse than their counterparts in
some developing countries such as Mexico (26%) and Turkey
(20%).
At Hazon Yeshaya
Soup Kitchens, we look into the faces of the hungry every day, young
and old alike, and pray we will be able to answer their pleas for
help. During this special time of the year, your support for Hazon
Yeshaya’s food-assistance programs guarantees that thousands of
hungry children and families will receive healthy, well-balanced and
nutritious hot meals every day of the year.
The approach of
a new year is a time of hope. Please open your hearts to those less
fortunate among us who need your help to truly make the new year one
of hope and promise. I thank you for your generous past support and
I look forward to working together in the coming new year to bring
relief to those in need.
May the Almighty
bless you with a sweet new year filled with peace, good health,
happiness and success.

FEEDING A BETTER FUTURE
2004-2005 annual campaign goal: $8 million
Four years since the outbreak of
violence and terrorism across Israel, the country’s economic woes
continue. More than 1.4 million Israelis now live in poverty.
Unemployment has reached an historic high at 11%. Government
benefits have been slashed and lines at Hazon Yeshaya soup kitchens
are getting longer and longer. ...

ADOPT A HUNGRY CHILD As Israel continues to
work towards peace, it must also direct its attention to resolving
severe economic problems. Sadly, over the past few years, hundreds
of thousands of people have been pushed below the poverty line,
among them nearly 700,000 children....
