Celebrating in a Divided City

As we celebrate 40 years since the reunification of Jerusalem, Israel’s cities truly remain divided – between rich and poor – those who dine in fancy restaurants and those who scavenge for food in trash cans. Israel has come a long way in 40 years, but many of its people have been left behind. For many elderly Holocaust survivors, living in Jerusalem was once a dream, but scraping together money for food is now a nightmare. Jerusalem’s future depends on its children, many of whom go to school each day with empty bellies. Luckily Hazon Yeshaya is there to help them and their parents, with hand-outs and a hand-up. Read on to learn more and click here to support our vital work – for the sake of Jerusalem.

New Hazon Yeshaya Center now open in Ashkelon

Ashkelon was one of four trial sites for the controversial Wisconsin Plan - a welfare-to-work scheme which has now been scrapped by the Government because it failed to help the needy find work. In fact, it made life worse for single mothers, elderly people, immigrants, and those with special needs, many of whom lost their social welfare benefits because they were unable to participate.

As the economic situation in Ashkelon has deteriorated, Hazon Yeshaya has stepped in to help, with the blessing of the Mayor. We are now serving over 4,000 hot meals a day to those in need from our fourth new kitchen. We hope that this marks the beginning of a brighter future for the hungry children and the elderly of Ashkelon.

Lifting Israel Out of Poverty
Editorial by Abraham Israel
Israel’s Government has announced a new three-year plan to combat poverty which resembles the efforts of a paramedic applying plaster to a haemorrhaging wound. With 1.63 million Israelis living below the poverty line, the Government plans to help just 242,000 of them over the next three years, leaving 1.4 million without hope….

The Government’s new anti-poverty plan is following our lead. Hazon Yeshaya recognized the need to help lift families out of poverty several years ago and has set up training courses to prepare people to enter the labour market. Our courses in hairdressing, cosmetics, computers, book-keeping and secretarial skills receive no state funding at all, although we have been told by TAMAT (the Israeli Government agency responsible) that our training is second to none. ! ….. read on...

Thanks to all our wonderful supporters!

The Young Leadership of American Friends of Hazon Yeshaya, ran their third successful Souper Hero Sunday event in April 2008. With the theme ‘be a hero to someone less fortunate’, they served different varieties of soup and ‘hero’ deli sandwiches, with live music and raffles in aid of Hazon Yeshaya. In order to attend the event, people had to become supporters of the charity. Thanks to all those who helped make the event a tremendous success!

Dental Check-Up

Our Dental Clinics are working to ensure that children receive proper treatment for serious dental problems and gum decay.  Professional dentists volunteer their time to help those who cannot afford basic treatment, and they help teach children how to prevent decay too.  Click here to learn more about our dental clinics.
